Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

welcome to the GfAS Annual Symposium 2026 in Berlin, Germany!

The topic of our annual meeting is:

40 years for Inborn Errors of Metabolism: Achievements. Challenges. Future.

At this special anniversary of our society we look back at all our efforts in the last years to improve the standard of care and the treatment for patients with inborn errors of metabolism.

In these years, metabolic medicine has significantly advanced with almost 2000 inborn metabolic diseases today, new genetic diagnostic and treatment approaches and an incidence exceeding 1 in 1000 affected newborns suffering from an inborn metabolic disease.

This year’s symposium will have a different structure than the meetings in the last years. We want to give an update on new diseases and the new developments in diagnostics and treatment of the last 2 to 3 years. Imagine a bird’s eye view over the metabolic landscape at this meeting!

In addition, we will invite representatives from politics, research and clinical medicine to discuss the current challenges of a high quality, timely and skilled care of patients with inborn metabolic diseases and the many challenges for patients receiving the optimal care.

Our aim is to connect pediatric and adult metabolic medicine more tightly, to foster adult metabolic clinics that will soon be needed given the large number of adult metabolic patients in the future.

We are looking forward meeting all our GfAS members, colleagues from adult metabolic medicine (ASIM) and additional closely related areas as well as all other guests in Berlin. Please attend the meeting in order to connect, discuss and plan together for the future of metabolic medicine in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Kind regards

Ute Spiekerkötter

Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus, Berlin

The Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus (LVH) is centrally located in Berlin-Mitte at Luisenstraße 58/59, 10117 Berlin – directly next to Charité and only about a 15-minute walk from Berlin Central Station. This makes the venue easily accessible by car, train, and plane.

The LVH is particularly easy to reach by public transport: The bus stop “Charité Campus Mitte” is located directly in front of the building and is served, among others, by line 147. From the Main Station or the S+U-Bahn Station Friedrichstraße, you can take the bus directly to the entrance. Current timetables can be found in the BVG route planner.

For arrival by car, please note that the Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus does not have its own parking spaces. However, paid parking spaces and public parking garages are available in the vicinity, e.g., the PARK ONE multi-storey car park on Luisenstraße (approx. 5 minutes on foot) or the Hauptbahnhof P1 underground car park (approx. 17 minutes on foot). As capacities in the city center may be limited, we recommend – if possible – traveling by public transport.

From Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), you can reach Berlin Central Station in about 30 minutes by Airport Express (FEX) or regional trains, and from there, continue by bus 147 to “Charité Campus Mitte”.
