The GfAS aims to anchor Pediatric Metabolic Medicine (PMM) more firmly in medical training regulations.
National level
- The German licensing regulations (AO) for physicians provide for a science-based education.
- In the German further training regulations, Pediatric Metabolic Medicine is not yet represented.
- The GfAS has repeatedly attempted to include additional training in “Pediatric Metabolic Medicine” in the model further training regulations – so far without success, as the German Medical Assembly has not approved this.
European level
In parallel, the GfAS supports the European certification process through:
- the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (SSIEM)
- the European Academy of Pediatrics (EAP)
The Educational and Training Advisory Committee (ETAC) plays a central role in this. This committee has:
- developed criteria for training centers for Pediatric Metabolic Medicine
- a training catalog (Syllabus) for:
- clinical training
- laboratory medical training
Relevant documents:
Certified training centers (according to ETAC criteria):
- Univ.-Children’s Hospital Heidelberg
- Univ.-Children’s Hospitals Innsbruck and Salzburg
- Univ.-Children’s Hospital Zurich
- Univ.-Children’s Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf
- Univ.-Children’s Hospital Freiburg
- Children’s Hospital Reutlingen
- Hannover Medical School
- Univ.-Children’s Hospital Göttingen
The GfAS aims to have further training centers recognized at the European level and recommends that interested centers contact the GfAS board.
